Jean C. Hixenbaugh was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She left this world peacefully, on August 15, 2023, at the age of 91. Jean was born to Estelle and Charles Cavill, and had one younger sister, Joyce. They grew up in the Dormont section of Pittsburgh and were very involved in their church and the Eastern Stars with her mother and sister. Jean met Lyle Hixenbaugh at the University of Pittsburgh. They later married and had 5 children together (John, Melissa, Margaret, Lyle and Elizabeth). Married life greatly expanded Jean’s world. Lyle’s work took them to experience life in many different countries (Japan, Australia, Morocco, Brazil, Venezuela, Egypt, Pakistan & Lesotho), as well as many different parts of the US (Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York and New Jersey). Jean learned and excelled at cooking a variety of cuisines and was involved in many charitable groups while living abroad and in the US. No matter where she lived, Jean loved to be outside gardening. She also enjoyed joining and working in different church groups and sang in the church choir. As always happens with children, Jean’s 5 grew up, married and had children of their own. They gave Jean and Lyle 11 grandchildren (Brian, Suzanne, Dante, Ember, Ian, Amy, Sean, Scotty, John, Catherine, and Jean). In turn, these children grew up, married and gave them (as of this date) 16 great-grandchildren (Tyler, Andrew, Emily, Ronin, Beatrice, Grayson, Aili, Caitrin, Tahlia, Tamlin, Jude, Evelyn, Hazel, Adelaide, Evelyn (yes there are 2!), and Ivory). Jean delighted in, and loved each and every one of them. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 am on August 21, 2023 at Providence Presbyterian Church, 77 Phillips LN, McKees Rocks, PA. Her funeral service is scheduled for 2 pm on August 24, 2023 at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 1350 Washington Valley Rd., Bridgwater, NJ. She will be buried alongside her husband in the Memorial Garden at St. Martin’s Church. Jean’s family is deeply appreciative of the wonderful nurses, aides and caregivers at St. Barnabas Nursing Home in Gibsonia, PA. They looked after and treated her with dignity and respect during her time spent with them.

Finally, this quote sums up her life-long relationship with God and nature: "Kiss of the sun for pardon. Song of the birds for mirth. You're closer to God's heart in a garden than any place else on earth." -Dorothy Frances Blomfield
Love you, Rest in Peace, Mom!
