Mary Monica Mulroney Smetanka passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026. She was born in Dublin, Ireland, and wore her Irish heritage with pride. Being Irish helped shape the person she would become.
She was born on August 29, 1939, to Anne and Thomas Mulroney in the Dublin neighborhood of Crumlin. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 21. She met her husband, George, after a softball game on the North Side, and they were married when she was 29 and he was 36—late for that time, perhaps, but Monica’s wit, charm, and beauty convinced George to give up his bachelorhood. It was the best decision he ever made.
Together, they had four children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Being with her family, singing, dancing, and enjoying the occasional rum and Diet Coke brought her great happiness—joy she shared with everyone around her. Later in life, she cherished annual trips to Bethany Beach with her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Annie Mulroney; her husband, George Smetanka; her brothers, Thomas Mulroney (Annie), Joseph Mulroney, Anthony Mulroney, and Noel Mulroney; her sister, Ellen Stewart (John); her nephew, Johnny Stewart; her sister-in-law, Helen Klimchak (John); and Joseph Smetanka (Marie).
Monica is survived by her children: Leslie Steratore (Frank), Richard Smetanka (Lauri), Gary Smetanka (Natalie), and Bryan Smetanka (Skyler); her grandchildren: Alli Blake (Cole), Frankie Steratore (Bailey), Nick Steratore, Keegan Smetanka, and Reese Smetanka; and her great-grandchild, Jackson Blake. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition, she leaves behind: The Harp & Fiddle, Sieb’s, Riley’s Pour House, Patrick’s Pub, and Harpoon Hanna’s. These Irish establishments will never be the same without Monica gracing their doors—smiling, laughing, dancing, singing, and “havin’” one or two. To honor Monica’s amazing life, please raise a glass of your favorite libation and listen to your favorite song.
